Celebrating 20 Years of Bringing Nature to Cities
The first tree planting event at Ashbridge's Bay. (Photo: Evergreen)Evergreen is celebrating its 20th anniversary of bringing nature to Canadian cities. We could not have achieved the impact we have today without you, so join us this year in commemorating this important milestone.
Whether you’ve helped green a school ground or park, planted trees, removed invasive species or made a donation, 2011 marks an important moment for your support and involvement.
The festivities start this April with Earth Week activities in Vancouver and the GTA. Stay tuned to our events calendar for details!
We'll be releasing our archives for more Evergreen history soon but until then, here’s a look at our first tree planting in 1991 at Ashbridge's Bay. Can you recognize anyone?

“Shovel is Power” - as said by Alan Tonks, the then Metro Toronto Chairman. A unique moment when Evergreen first launched ideas related to green cities and came together as a charitable organization (official Charitable status in March 1991 - 20 years ago last week).
In the photo is Alan Tonks (with the shovel in the background), Kevin McLaughlin (CEO Autoshare, Toronto), Andrea Thomas (Vancouver), Phil Brodeur (Ireland), not sure of the next suit, me - Geoff Cape with hair, Lindsey Tayor (NYC),the CEO of Druxys, Tony Hyland (Vancouver), Nuria Bronfman (Toronto). It was a fun group and the Barenaked Ladies played some tunes for us that afternoon on the waterfront.
