Donald Williams: Keeping the Garden Market green
Volunteer Donald Williams watering plants at Evergreen Garden Market (Photo: Clarine Lee-Macaraig)One of the many ways Evergreen is helping to make cities more livable is through the Evergreen Garden Market: a mission-driven retail garden centre and market that equips Torontonians to bring nature into their backyard or balcony.
The Market is a bustling place kept stocked, organized and lush with plant life by the staff and team of amazing volunteers like Garden Market Greener, Donald Williams. Since March, Donald has been a key Garden Market Greener team member, volunteering weekly with our volunteer program partner, Community Living Toronto. He recently took some time away from watering the plants (his favourite job!) to tell us about his volunteer experience this year:
Why volunteer? I like to make sure the plants are taken care of so I make sure they are well watered. I also like to make sure the Garden Market looks good so I make sure I do a good job sweeping and cleaning. I really love coming here.
Highlights: I look forward to signing in and out of the volunteer sign-in book. It makes me feel like I belong. I love to work!
Favorite thing at Evergreen: I love the staff at EGM. They are all my friends. I am a people person.
If you’re thinking of volunteering: Out of all the other places I volunteer at, Evergreen is the only place that recognizes their volunteers and gives me an appreciation t-shirt! I tell all my friends that Evergreen gave me a t-shirt when I volunteer and I love my shirt!
Thanks Donald for helping to keep us growing!

Donald is one of our most hard work and committed volunteers. He comes every week with so much excitement. I don’t think he knows the meaning of rest! And working with our volunteer program partner Toronto Community Living has been a joy.
