Green City Adventurers Take Over Evergreen Brick Works

By: Michelle Laporte

Fifteen young adventurers descended upon the ravines and trails at Evergreen Brick Works for our first week of camp, proving that nature is the best playground.

Interactive activities and new challenges faced the first batch of Evergreen Green City Adventure Campers, who worked together to find innovative ways to solve problems in an action-packed week of camp. From surviving fire ant bites and learning the natural remedy to take away the sting (plantain), to finding a way to cross the creek (we built bridges), the group of young explorers battled through the difficulties that faced them, learning that everything they really need is inside of them and all around them. In this way, kids become more resilient. They learn that being outside is great! And they grow fast when you give them the space.

We also wandered around the ravines and wetlands to learn about the animals, plants and trees growing around us, while mapping our adventures and cleaning up the places we love. We chalked up an epic Bike City where bikes rule, using our imaginations to imagine another world, and then navigated the ravine trails and Toronto island on our bikes.

Campers also made delicious apple butter with Chef Emerie, and gathered all sorts of findings for our growing Nature Museum, including cicada skins. Hidden spots, amazing animals and wandering trails are just some of the wonders of the outdoors that are waiting to be discovered.

Bring your young explorers and adventurers to learn and play outdoors at our monthly Nature Nut Club, for kids ages 7–12. Your kids can learn about nature while you shop at our Farmer’s Market on the last Saturday of each month. We also have lots of fun activities for little ones all year-round; check out our Events Calendar for more fun activities for kids.
