The Heritage Harvest Celebration at Evergreen BC’s Urban Orchard earlier this month was a delicious success, honouring the past and future of food and culture in the False Creek Flats. Hundreds of apples from local trees were donated by the Vancouver Fruit Tree Project. Our dedicated Evergreen volunteers toiled away on the cider press, mulling tasty apple cider for event attendees.

The celebration began with an official welcome from the Siyamin Stamsh Canoe Family representing the Squamish First Nation, followed by drumming and dancing. And yes, we even got to dance a bit!

The rest of the afternoon was a smorgasbord of tasty bannock, accompanied by folk and rock music from talented local musicians. Participants made seed-bombs to take home with them, and were able to learn about medicinal and edible native plants.

The fall sunshine was a treat, and we can’t wait until the harvest next year!
