MOVE Charrette: A report from Group Three

Wow, what an intense day! The second day of the Sustainable Transportation Charrette kicked off with a huge brainstorming session and a review of all of the ideas that the team brought to the table on Friday. We bounced all of the ideas off of our team advisors, who gave us great feedback and insight into the current barriers to change facing public transportation within the city.

After the team kick-off, we went to work on creating user archetypes for the Kingston-Galloway area. We were looking at three types of public transportation users who are common to the area: the single-parent family, the nuclear family and the elderly single resident.

After listing the various day-to-day scenarios that take place with each resident, a summary of several issues that each user faces was pulled together. So far, we have the following guidelines on which to base our plan:

  1. Cycling and Pedestrian Infrastructure: Increase the cycling/walking paths in the area and make them safe to use to promote active lifestyles
  2. Alternative Transportation: Community Shuttle, which could also include a home delivery system for groceries. This would provide shuttles to areas where TTC buses do not currently have routes
  3. Hub Concept: A central market and transportation area that would help residents interact within their community and also create easy access for public transportation (possibly at the corner of Kingston & Lawrence)
  4. TTC Transit City + Go Transit: Possible cost reduction to priority neighborhoods?

The big challenge is to come up with simple and constructive solutions that can be put in place now (not 20 years from now!) so that the residents can begin to see instant results.

There is a lot more work to come before end of Sunday!
