My local humane society in Toronto opened a new rooftop garden last month, thanks to a partnership between cat food company Purina and environmental nonprofit group Evergreen. The new space gives shelter volunteers a much-needed area with fresh air. It has bunches of catnip and other tasty herbs filling the containers; the garden’s designed as much for cats as it is for those who care for them.

Every year, the AZ Awards, organized by Canadian design magazine Azure, celebrate cutting-edge architecture and interior design from around the world. The expected all-white buildings and futuristic furniture got nods at the most recent ceremony in downtown Toronto, but the $5,000 top prize was given to something decidedly more unusual: a man-made beehive erected on a derelict industrial site in Buffalo, N.Y. There are over 60 vendors at the Brick Works’ market, meaning it’s possible to pretty much get anything you need for the weekend. This includes produce, bread, meat, fish, dairy, chocolate, pickles, preserves, flowers, coffee, health products, and crafts. Different musical acts perform each weekend, and special events are even celebrated, like National Aboriginal Awareness Month this past June.

Brick Works is mostly known as an open air farmers' market. But it's so much more than that. It's sort of a community centre where you can get food, entertain your entire family, meet people, enjoy the nature, learn new things and of course go photo crazy, like I did. The old brick structures and the kilns are so photogenic!

I LOVE the idea of exploring rundown buildings, and I love that Evegreen has taken these buildings and turned them into an urban park and cultural centre for everyone to enjoy. Evergreen is a national charity dedicated to restoring nature in urban environments. They really did a good job here, and they kept the charm of the old brick stuff.
