Volunteer Opportunities

Toronto: Event Assistant – Ride the Ravines

Commitment: 4 to 6-hour shift on Sunday, June 16

Big into bikes and keen on community? We want you! Evergreen Brick Works is holding our second annual Ride the Ravines event in support of our community bicycle programming and we need you to help make it happen. On Sunday June 16, an epic team of bike enthusiasts, community members, families and nature lovers will come together to ride the 25km from Evergreen Brick Works through Taylor Creek Park south to Kew Beach, across the lakeshore and back up the Don Valley Trail to home base. There is also a shorter 12km ride to Taylor Creek Park.

Volunteer roles during the event include: Route Stewards, Ride Marshalls, Route Guides, Rest Stop Animators, Home-Base Helpers and Registration Superstars. By being part of this team, you’ll be helping Torontonians young and old to connect with our parks and ravines on two wheels—or even three!

What you bring: You’re interested in city cycling, community work and exploring in nature. You bring a spirit of team work and enjoy working with the public. You are either a confident cyclist and/or passionate about promoting safe and healthy transportation in the city. First aid, CPR and bicycle mechanics are an asset but not required for all roles.

When & where: Starting at Evergreen Brick Works, 550 Bayview Ave, the ride takes place 9am–noon along a 25km or 12km route and returns to Evergreen Brick Works for a post-ride event. Commit to at least one shift over the day—these will vary between 6am and 5pm, with shifts lasting 4 to 6 hours. Volunteers will be dispersed all along the route starting at Evergreen Brick Works, rest stops, key road/trail points and within the bike groups.

How we’ll support you: All Event Assistants will need to attend the orientation and training on Sunday June 9, 10am–noon at Evergreen Brick Works—we will cover the route, logistics, roles and safety for the ride. Ride Marshalls will be required to participate in the practice ride on Sunday June 9 at 1pm, other volunteers are welcome to join. Evergreen Staff and Volunteer leaders from Bike Works will be stationed all along the 25km to support volunteers and participants throughout the event.

Perks: Learn more about the ravine systems in Toronto and how to safely ride them with family and friends. Enjoy complimentary refreshments and the opportunity to use Bike Works, our community DIY shop, to tune up your own ride pre- or post-event.

Good to know: Volunteers will receive an Evergreen t-shirt to wear the day of, and keep! Not all roles require you to ride a bicycle. The shuttle bus will be extended to accommodate the early start.

If this sounds like you: Contact Event Coordinator, Meaghan Orlinski at morlinski@evergreen.ca to find out more. If you have not completed an Evergreen Volunteer Application before, please complete one from our volunteer page and submit as well.
