Volunteer Opportunities

Toronto: Garden Market Greener

Commitment: 4-6 hours a week

Come out and join the Evergreen Garden Market team to help ensure that plant stock is thriving and our store is bustling with local goodies - volunteers assist with seasonal aspects of operation and customer service to EBW visitors year-round. Garden Market Greeners will focus on several key areas depending on season: plant maintenance, customer service, product stocking & inventory and general store cleanliness. Volunteers will be based in the retail part of the Evergreen Garden Market (getting familiar with the variety of sustainable products and native plants); and helping with a variety of Urban Gardening Workshops that EGM hosts on weekends. Evergreen Garden Market is a mission driven retail garden centre and market that equips Torontonians to live a more sustainable lifestyle. All sale proceeds directly support our accessible and inclusive community programming at Evergreen Brick Works through our social enterprise model.

What you bring: You are comfortable working outdoors and occasionally reaching, crouching, and lifting up to 20 lbs. You are reliable, enthusiastic, love talking to people and keen to learn. You have a friendly, outgoing personality with strong verbal communication skills in English. You can work independently as well as in a small group. Experience in customer service and native plants are an asset.

When and where: All volunteering takes place at Evergreen Garden Market at Evergreen Brick Works. Weekdays and weekends ongoing, about 4-6 hours a week, times flexible based on needs and volunteer availability.

How we’ll support you:  Attend a mandatory orientation to Evergreen Brick Works and Evergreen Garden Market (date and time TBD) and learn on the job about the many sustainable products and native plants. You’ll work closely with experienced Evergreen Garden Market staff and other volunteers. Gloves are provided.

Perks: You’ll get to learn about total plant health care, creating and maintaining healthy soils, who to get your most local, sustainable and eco-friendly products from, see how a social enterprise model works and more! Volunteers also receive a discount on store purchases.

Good to know: Garden Market Greeners will help to ensure our plant stock is thriving – however there is no direct gardening involved in this role. Volunteers will be working indoors and out so come dressed appropriately for the weather and with sturdy closed-toed shoes. Evergreen runs a free shuttle bus from Broadview subway station.

If this sounds like you: E-mail Clarine Lee-Macaraig cleemacaraig@evergreen.ca  with your interest. If you have not completed an Evergreen Volunteer Application before, please complete one and submit this as well.
