Volunteer Opportunities
Vancouver, BC: Urban Orchard Volunteer
Term: Various, ongoing
Help us grow the Great Northern Way Urban Orchard! Evergreen and the Great Northern Way Campus are expanding programming and fruit production in the Urban Orchard throughout 2012. Urban Orchard Volunteers can help with planter box building, orchard maintenance (water, weed, etc), harvesting, public outreach and special events. Connect Vancouverites with where their food comes from.
What you bring: You work well with people and you’re willing to get your hands dirty and do physical work. You’re energetic and creative, with an interest in organic food production and community development. You don’t mind some inclement weather.
When and where: Beginning in April 2012, Depending on your interests, help build for a day, help for prep for an event for a couple of hours a week or commit to regular orchard maintenance a couple times a month. The Orchard is located behind the large white storage tent on the Great Northern Way Campus at 555 Great Northern Way, Vancouver.
How we’ll support you: Evergreen will provide an orientation to the Orchard and to the organization. Volunteers will also receive training specific to the work they wish to help with. You will be supported by Evergreen staff at the site, and will be kept informed about the volunteer program through regular e-newsletters. We'll have gloves, tools and water on site for you.
Perks: Learn the basics of fruit tree production in an urban setting and take some ownership of an important project in East Vancouver. You’ll get to learn through doing and be part of a fun and dedicated team.
Good to know: You’ll need to dress for the weather, as we work through hot sun and light rain. Sturdy shoes (closed toe) please, as well as a water bottle. Activities will vary depending on the season. If you’re interested in helping out on construction days, knowledge of basic carpentry/handy-work is helpful but not essential. You can get to the Great Northern Way Campus by walking, cycling or public transportation.
If this sounds like you: Contact Helen Beynon at hbeynon@evergreen.ca and let us know how you’d like to contribute to this project. If you have not completed an Evergreen application before, please download it from our Volunteering Page and submit it as well.
