With Evergreen Brick Works as a hub, the program will engage participants in activities that enable and encourage healthy lifestyle habits through outdoor recreation and food literacy.
Canadians young and old are suffering from myriad health problems, many of which are considered preventable through diet and physical activity. But challenges that hinder healthy eating and active living can be difficult to overcome, particularly in neighbourhoods where access to community resources that support healthy lifestyle choices is lacking.
“Get Outdoors, Get Active! provides inclusive recreation and food skills activities and workshops that are accessible to the everyone,” says Aimee Carson, community development manager, Evergreen. “The program will equip community members with the skills to make healthy choices by being active, outdoors, and learning about nutritional food choices year round. Efforts have already begun as community members and groups are coming to Evergreen Brick Works to engage in many of the program offerings underway.”
A key aspect of the project is a commitment to offer inclusive and relevant programming to the neighbouring communities of Evergreen Brick Works, including St. James Town, Regent Park, Flemingdon and Thorncliffe Parks.
Focusing on health impacts associated with increased physical activity and food choices, programming—such as cycling, skating, gardening, hiking, cooking and nutrition—will provide educational and instructional support, provision of necessary equipment and safety gear, as well as access to outdoor facilities.
We are pleased to partner with the Ontario Trillium Foundation as we work to make our cities more livable. Keep your eyes open for these activities in the coming months as community-focused healthy lifestyle programming takes the stage at Evergreen Brick Works.
